The Golden Ring consists of Russian ancient cities and towns, famous for their history and architectural monuments, which played the very important role in the consolidation of our state.
Vladimir, one of the oldest Russian towns, bears the name of its founder Prince Vladimir Monomakh. We found first mention of the city in XII c. when Vladimir became capital of North-Eastern Russia (Vladimir's Russia).
Vladimir museum-preserve includes architectural monuments of XII century: the Golden Gates, Dmitrov and Assumption Cathedrals, interesting architectural ensemble of the former residence of grand duke Andrei Bogolubsky. Not fare from Vladimir the majestic and unique Church of the Intercession on the Nerl (1165) is situated. It is often called "the miracle of poetry in the stone".
In 1983 Suzdal museum-preserve including Suzdal Kremlin, Cathedral of the Nativity of our Lady, Bishop's palace, Spaso-Yevfimievsky Monastery and Convent of the Intercession was awarded with the Golden Apple, honorary prize of the International Federation of TravelJournalists and Writers.
Tourists should also visit town of Gus-Khrustalny, famous for production of cut-glassware.
Being nearly of the same age as Moscow, Kostroma plaid a very important role in life of our state as the birthplace of Romanov dynasty. In 1613 the young Mikhail Romanov was proclaimed the Tsar of Russia at the Ipatiev Monastery. Besides Ipatiev Monastery, many churches, Epiphany-Anastasian Convent are interesting to be visited. The Trade Galleries are the chef-d'oeuvre of architecture in Russia.
Now the big industrial city, Yaroslavl keeps its famous past history.
It is situated on the high bank of Kotorosl river where from the magnificent panorama of the city is opened: many churches, white-stone Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Savour's Transfiguration) Monastery, fine red-brick silhouette of the Church of the Apparition of Christ. The only in Russia private museum "Music and Time" gathered a big and very interesting collection of musician instruments.
According to the chronics Rostov-the-Great was founded in the IX c. In XV с it became a religious centre for Moscow principality. It is situated on the picturesque coast of Nero Lake. The Rostov Kremlin built in XVII с as the Metropolitan's residence is the real gem of the Golden Ring' monuments. Rostov is also well known for its enamels.
The town of Sergiev Posad got its name from St Sergius who was born in the neighbouring town of Radonezh and in the middle of XIV с founded the largest and most important monastery in Russia well known as the HoleTrinity-St-Sergius Lavra (Monastery) in the suburbs of Moscow. Now it is a centre of religious life in Russia. The complex of the Lavra includes the Theological Seminary, the largest collection of religious literature and icons and treasures.
