Manezh Square is situated near the Kremlin and Red Square. It owes its name to the Manezh, a remarkable architectural monument of the beginning of 19th century. In 1997 a modern underground shopping recreation complex, the largest in Europe, has been opened here. It includes shops, cafes and a unique archaeological museum devoted to Moscow's history.
In 1839 the foundation stone of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
was laid. It was built during 40 years with the help of public donations. The Cathedral was a symbol of victory over Napoleon in the War of 1812. It was destroyed in 1931. Its rebuilding was begun with the laying of the foundation stone on January 7,1995 with the help of public donations and in 1997 it opened to service.
|Arbat is one of the oldest streets in Moscow. It was tirst mentioned in 1493. At present it is a pedestrian zone. Arbat is a street of restaurants, cafes and shops. Artists offering their souvenirs and paintings add a particular charm to the street. Arbat is one of the most cherished streets in Moscow.
The architectural complex on Poklonnaya Hill is a monument in honour of the victory over Nazism in 1945. Together with the Triumphal Arch and the museum «Panorama of the Battle of Borodino» (1812) it constitutes the ensemble of the Glory of the Russia army. The complex, built in 1995, consists of a park ensemble, the building of the memorial museum and the church of St. George the Victorious.
