The Russian North is a vast area incorporated Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Vologda and Leningrad regions as well as Karelian and Komi Republics. This country is remarkable for its majestic scenery and unique architecture.

The ancient Vologda Land with the towns of Vologda and Veliky Ustiug played a leading role in the history of Russian architecture. Founded there in the 14th century, the Monasteries of Our Saviour-on-the-Bend, of St Ciryl on lake Beloye and of St Therapont are striking for their splendour and originality of style. The real purl of the White sea is the Solovky archipelago with the powerful and austere architecture of the 15th century Solovetsky Monastery - the former northern outpost of Russia seemingly rising from the White Sea.

The magnificence of the white-stones Kargopol founded in the early 12th century, Kinozersk's national park, pilgrimage to the holy soil of the Valaam island produce an indelible impression on the beholder. But what imparts to the Russian North a truly breathtaking beauty is its marvelous wooden architecture: the Kizhi pogost, Mezen windmills, churches in Kondopoga, the village of Berezhnaya Dubrava, and in many other places. It is not accidental that these monuments, created over the centuries by the genius of unknown Russian masters, are rightly called the "wonder of the North" and some of them are exposed in the Museum of Wooden Architecture, inaugurated in 1973 in Arkhangelsk region.
